AUSTRALIAN HEARING SERVICES

AUSTRALIAN HEARING SERVICES provide a free service for people aged under 21 and over 65 and certain pensioners described in their site. The government have a voucher scheme for hearing aids. Hearing tests, hearing aid fitting and free batteries and follow up are provided for all those eligible. Some assistive listening devices and alerts are available for sale. A GP must refer. The Australian Hearing Services site is really good and informative.

BETTER HEARING AUSTRALIA (WA) INC

A voluntary organisation for hearing impaired people. They run lip-reading classes, provide advice and assistance and have a range of equipment to demonstrate. They have information pamphlets and "Hearing Help cards". Special packs and advice are offered for people going to hospital.

CICADA

The CochlearTM Implant Club and Advisory Association is a support group for prospective CochlearTM implantees and people having CochlearTM implants. They meet around once a month at the Lions Hearing Institute at Sir Charles Gardner Hospital in Shenton Park, WA having very interesting talks and events.

This is one of the best resources in the world for allocating books on Deafness and Deaf issues. Highly recommended is "Hearing Loss?" by Rosemary McCall.

LIONS HEARING DOGS

Lions Hearing Dogs provide free highly trained dogs to people who have severe hearing problems and love dogs. The person who is given a dog must also be able to care for or have access to care for a dog financially and physically. The dog will be trained in the centre in the Adelaide hills so that it will be able to respond to a doorknock, kettle whistle, telephone ring, smoke alarm, babycry and to attack an intruder. The dog will respond to some or all of these alerts or any other special alert the recipient requires. The dogs are accepted as guide dogs in every state of Australia. Eligibility is described in the website along with how to apply.

They specialise in CochlearTM Implants, CochlearTM BahaR and many other specialised operations and procedures. This is a highly recommended centre for the switch on and training of CochlearTM implantees.

LISTENING SOLUTIONS

Listening Solutions, formerly WA Electronics is a shop providing quality loop installations and many alerting and listening devices. Malcolm Winfield of WA Electronics is committed to providing on line solutions for hearing impaired and Deaf consumers. He is now able to steer customers towards possible funding solutions for their equipment.

OFFICE OF HEARING SERVICES

This site enables eligible people to gain access to hearing assessment and hearing aid vouchers through The Commonwealth Hearing Services Program. Vouchers are available for people over 65 and various pensioners if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident. The site covers Eligibility and How to Apply. Maintenance and batteries are included in the program. A top up arrangement whereby people can contribute to more expensive models of hearing aid than those covered by the scheme are explained.

WA DEAFNESS COUNCIL

This group is open to anyone in WA interested in working for the equal rights, access, opportunity and quality of life for people who are Deaf or hearing impaired or who are professionals working in this area. The group is a smaller local version of Deafness Forum. Recent activities included subtitling for television and film (ongoing), facilities for hearing impaired and Deaf people in hotels and motels and neonatal hearing testing.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN DEAF SOCIETY INC

WA DEAF SOCIETY provides an excellent employment service for Deaf and Hearing Impaired people. A social worker is available and interpreter booking. A wide range of alerting devices is available to try out, A good collection of subtitled videos and DVD's is available to members.
Recreation facilities and a bar are well used on the premises and there are many events mainly involving the signing community.
A branch of Westwood Spice (a national body of Deaf Societies) is soon is to be centred in the WA Deaf Society to operate Outreach (marketing) and training for the use of Telstra equipment.

WA POLICE have provided this service for Deaf, hearing impaired and speech impaired people for police attendance and reporting matters to the police. Emergencies should still use emergency numbers unless impossible. The police would prefer you to register with them as this makes things easier and faster. Forms are available from the above address.

GLOSSARY/DEFINITIONS
Palentypist
Speech to text reporter, who types phonetically using a computer with a special keyboard. Palentypists are used when television programmes are captioned live and can also be used in meetings so that a deafened person may read the screen, The type can also be projected onto a larger screen for seminars or large audiences.
