What is a Uniphone?
A Uniphone is a multipurpose phone with a screen and keyboard.
It can be used as:-
  1. A normal phone
  2. A telephone typewriter (TTY) that can be operated directly with another TTY, typing one way and reading the screen on the TTY the other way. This can only be done if the person on the other end of the line has a TTY or Uniphone.
  3. With voice one way (VCO) using the National Relay Service (NRS). This involves speaking to the operator of the NRS and she/he types EVERYTHING (including laughter and hum and ha) onto the incoming screen on the phone.
  4. An amplified phone
  5. To record messages retrieved on the screen.
  6. A speech impaired telephone, typing one way and listening the other way. People with severe speech impediments will benefit. This can also be a perfect solution for people retaining independence whilst recovering from a stroke, for instance. It can be a permanent or a temporary solution.
What is the NRS?
The NRS is a specially trained group of operators operating in Melbourne and Brisbane. They are trained to work with people who have speech and hearing difficulties. If someone is very slow they can be registered for a special service where the operator can give more intensive assistance. The service is available 24 hours a day all year.
What is a TTY?
A TTY is a telephone with a screen and keyboard.

It can be used:-
  1. To type from your TTY to another person with a TTY.
  2. To communicate with people who do not have a TTY using the NRS. The NRS operator will type everything the other person says which is then read on the screen.
  3. To record messages on a roll of paper (some models only)

What is an amplified phone?
An amplified phone has a volume control so that you can either roll a switch or press a button to increase the volume of incoming sound. It can usually have a telecoil inside the handset which enables a user to use a 'T' switch on their hearing aid if they have one. This means that they can listen to the caller through their hearing aid at their normal comfortable level.

How do I apply for a special phone?
You obtain a Disability Equipment form by contacting Telstra Disability Services in the phone book. This will involve going to your GP or audiologist to have your form signed. It would be useful to print out the decibel range of the telephone so that your audiologist can advise you of the most suitable phone for you. The cost of any of this telephone range is a very small fee on top of your rental. Extension amplified ringers and flashing alerts are also available free of charge
How can I learn to use my TTY or Uniphone?
Westwood Spice provides training from your local Deaf Society on a one to one basis. There are full instructions and a CD available with the equipment.

Is there an emergency service with the NRS?
Yes, by dialling 106 to ask for an ambulance (AAA) Fire (FFF) or Police (PPP) available 24 hours a day.
